From Black Men To The So-Called “Bro Voters” : You’re Welcome

I’ll bet everything I’ve got and everything I’ll ever have that the so-called “Bro Voters” don’t know the debt they owe to Black American men.

Just ask yourself: how much is the very core of your social identity worth to you? It is so difficult to quantify that we have seen men thoroughly disgrace and debase themselves quite recently in order to hold on to their social identity. Why else would any group vote overwhelmingly to put a convicted criminal in office if it wasn’t a response to a belief that their very identity was on the line?

What has become known as “Bro Culture” is a nice and catchy nickname for being an uninformed, unenlightened, insecure and performatively masculine douchebag. Specifically, being all of those things and allegedly a single-issue voter whose sole purpose is attacking those who are not a part of the ‘Bro’ sub-culture.

The thing is, Black men in this country invented the term ‘Bro’ as a cultural marker. It arose from the Black church, where Black men had made a custom of adding ‘Brother’ to another man’s name when addressing him; both as a term of endearment and respect. ‘Bro’ was an acknowledgment of a connection that was deep and abiding, made all the more impactful…
